Mid-Century Modern Architecture travel guide

a guide to architectural wonders

This 384 page guidebook published by Phaidon is the first to focus on the mid-century modern architectural wonders of the west coast of the USA and features an expertly curated list of 250 must-see destinations.

This travel guide was to be easy to navigate and reflect the optimistic and graphic spirit of the Mid-Century in the USA.

  • To do so, it was designed in a convenient pocket size, with simple, robust grid and typographic system to allow for easy navigation, with each section organised by city, with a corresponding map to help plan your visit.

We took design cues from the art, colours and architectural details associated with the movement. We chose the highly decorative typeface Clarendon for the titles to reflect the bold architectural choices of the aera. For each chapter, I chose a colour and a shape and developed a bespoke pattern to use as breaker page. For the cover, we decided to take a colourful graphic approach to contrast with the usual photographic covers of the travel guide.
