Old Spitalfields Market
Redefining an East London icon
Back in 2013, Old Spitalfields Market’s new owners approached Bibliothèque to help them create a new vision for this iconic destination. A legacy of redevelopment and a lack of curatorial direction had resulted in a fragmented offer and a lack of identity.

Our strategy was to create a Modern Market, a new model inspired by the best traditional markets and curated spaces. This resulted in the creation of a positioning line, ‘Old Spitalfields Market, modern since 1887’ and a new visual language that clearly articulated the vision to existing and future tenants.
For this project, I developed two bespoke typefaces (including icons), which were a modern take on the stencils synonymous with market and street art relevant to the location. I also worked on B2C collaterals such as maps and on-site signage.
